I Cut People | Buried Together (A Tragedy)

Album Year: 2020

While the previous series I released were a reaction, response, and an overcoming of inward exhaustion leading to an upheaval in existence, Buried Together is the settling of dust. This is the aftermath of a decade of defining meaning and overcoming debilitating insecurities and fears; entelechy in a constant state of becoming.

The quote below from Goethe’s Faust (by Mephistopheles) is the thematic starting point of Buried Together. The ending line, “And you need night as well as day.” is a reminder that with comfort, we also need suffering; with life, we need death; with stillness, we need chaos.

In all its grandeur, life is still a tragedy. Although Buried Together is full of lively humor and built upon a solid foundation of growth, it ends in sorrow.

“Believe me who for many a thousand year
Has chewed this cud and never rested,
That from the cradle to the bier
The ancient leaven cannot be digested.
Trust one like me, this whole array
Is for a God—there’s no contender:
He dwells in his eternal splendor,
To darkness we had to surrender,
And you need night as well as day.”

– Goethe, Faust, First Part of the Tragedy
