Sonata Colours

for piano
6 short movements based on Goethe’s Theory of Colours

  • I. Yellow – A glow at once seems to breathe towards us.
  • II. Blue – A stimulating negation.
  • III. Green – If the two elementary colors [blue and yellow] are mixed in perfect equality so that neither predominates.
  • IV. Red-Yellow – It represents the hue of the intenser glow of fire, and the milder radiance of the setting sun.
  • V. Blue-Red  – A still impatient progress.
  • VI. Red – It conveys an impression of gravity and dignity.

Imitating Nature/God

  • Piano – Imitating thunder and lightning.
  • Cello – Imitating the movement of the clouds.
  • Radio – Station static to represent rain.
  • Clarinet – Imitating bird sounds after the storm subsides.
